Welcome to the Mesa
Martin Luther King, Jr. Web Site

  Changes in 2012

Before the Mesa MLK Committee was incorporated, a group of Mesa citizens coordinated the first Mesa MLK breakfast nearly 25 years ago. The committee kept the tradition for another 20 years. However, the last two years years the committee has made a change to coordinate a Dinner Banquet. This year it will be held at Mesa Community College in the Navajo Room. In addition to the support many citizens have given over the years, the committee is hoping to capture the support of those who couldn't attend in the past due to a scheduled work day.

We encourage everyone to come out and join the celebration on Saturday, January 14, 2012.

The keynote speaker is Kim Covington, 12 News Anchor, weekend evening newscasts, weekday noon newscast reports and she produces the highly popular franchise called "School Solutions. She has reported news locally in Phoenix for the last six years. Kim received numerous awards for her  broadcasting work, including several Best of Gannett and Emmy awards for reporting. School Solutions has also been honored with a Rocky Mountain Southwest Chapter Emmy award. She also received an Arizona School Board Association award, an Arizona School Public Relations award, Judge Jean Williams Service award and has been honored with Missouri, Arkansas and National Associated Press awards, among others. Kim is passionate about serving children and learning new things; as a reporter she gets that opportunity every day.

Building a Better Mesa by Building Community Spirit

As Dr. King noted in his speech, Strength of Love, we are the light that must drive out the darkness and the love that will drive out hate.

So we join the City of Mesa in the quest to build a better Mesa by continuing the efforts to build community spirit through the Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration events.

You will experience changes in the events that supports our goals to bring activities to the downtown area, assist those in need, and provide more scholarships throughout the year.

Preserving
Dr. King's
idea and philosophy
of peace
and
equality.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiples toughness in a descending spiral of destruction...The chain reaction of evil -- hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars -- must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation."
